The Philippine government has approved more than 1,800 prescription drugs to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), according to health officials.
The approval is expected to take effect in the next year, with the drugmakers bringing new versions of the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and Cialis to the market.
Pharmaceutical companies have been testing various versions of the drug since it was introduced in 1990, including a formulation that contains a different chemical called sildenafil, which is sold under the name Viagra.
The FDA's approval came as the health department in New York, where the agency is based, received approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the drug and its generic version, which is available generically.
"The approval of Viagra/sildenafil (Viagra-Cialis) drug for the treatment of ED has been very impressive," Dr. Andrew McCullough, director of the FDA's health division, told Healthline.
The approval for the drug, which was approved by the FDA on March 28, is expected to last until May, but the pharmaceutical companies say they plan to test the drug under stringent conditions. They say they plan to continue testing the drug and develop more of its generic formulation.
